Victoria College is helping students transition from the classroom to the workforce through paid internships supported by the Texas Internship Initiative (TII).

Victoria College received a $78,624 subcontract from the Workforce Solutions Golden Crescent through TII, a program funded by the Texas Workforce Commission. Supported 100 percent by federal funding from the US Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Children and Families, the initiative promotes collaboration among workforce boards, educational institutions and employers to create internships in targeted middle-skill STEM occupations.

The internships gave seven VC graduates the opportunity to apply the skills they developed in the classroom while gaining valuable experience alongside professionals in their chosen fields.

One of those students is Daniel Folkner. He participated in a paid internship at Seadrift Coke, where he gained real-world experience and expanded his knowledge of the process technology industry.

Roger Mejia and Cade Holmstrom gained hands-on industry experience through paid internships with ConocoPhillips, putting their technical skills to work alongside process technology industry professionals as well.

Recent Associate Degree Nursing graduate Rosalba Carrera also gained hands-on experience through a paid internship with the Jackson County Hospital District (JCHD) in Edna. A Jackson County resident, Carrera completed her internship with JCHD, working alongside its nursing team while developing her clinical skills and caring for patients.

Paid internships allow VC students to build professional skills while giving local employers an opportunity to help prepare the next generation of workers.

“Victoria College and the Golden Crescent Workforce Development Board are grateful to Seadrift Coke, ConocoPhillips, and Jackson County Hospital District for investing in VC students and graduates and supporting workforce development throughout the region,” said Bobby Cubriel, Director of Advising, Counseling, & Support Services.
