Victoria College to celebrate Texas Girls in STEM Day with NASA guest speaker

NASA employee Abigail Mooreland Abigail Mooreside

The community is invited to celebrate Texas Girls in STEM Day on Saturday, March 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 130 of the Health Sciences Center at Victoria College.

The free event will feature a special discussion with Abigail “Abby” Mooreside, a spaceflight operations scientist from NASA Johnson Space Center, who will share her experiences working in the aerospace industry and offer insight into careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Originally from South Carolina, Mooreside graduated from Embry‑Riddle Aeronautical University in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in Spaceflight Operations and minors in Human Factors and Aerospace Life Sciences. She began her NASA career in 2022 as a contractor at NASA Langley Research Center, supporting spaceflight medical operations research and engineering for the Artemis Human Landing System. She is currently training at NASA’s Johnson Space Center to become a Ground Control Specialist flight controller for the International Space Station.

Texas Girls in STEM Day is recognized statewide under House Bill 3435 to highlight women’s experiences in STEM fields and encourage girls and young women to explore opportunities in science and technology careers.

Victoria College’s celebration is open to students, families, and community members of all ages. VC’s Health Sciences Center is located at Entrance 9 on Red River Street, directly across from Citizens Medical Center. Refreshments will be served and guests can also view the Tenna and Chris Thompson Gem and Mineral Exhibit and the Prehistoric Fossil Exhibit located inside the building.
