Native American artifacts
Victoria College’s Museum of the Coastal Bend invites the community to participate in its fifth annual Atlatl Turkey Shoot on Thursday, Nov. 20, and Hands-on History events on Tuesday, Nov. 25, and Wednesday, Nov. 26.
The Atlatl Turkey Shoot is a free event featuring competitions in distance and accuracy using atlatls, a historical spear-throwing weapon. Participants must be 12 years of age or older. Those under 16 must have a parent or guardian present.
The contest will take place from 8 a.m. to noon on the VC Quad. Practice stations are available for those unfamiliar with throwing atlatls. The first 80 competitors will receive a free t-shirt.
The museum’s two-day Hands-on History events include a Native American Heritage Tour of staff favorite items on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 2 p.m. Visitors can tour the permanent exhibits with museum staff and volunteers as they provide insight into their favorite artifacts.
On Tuesday, Nov. 25, and Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m. visitors can learn about Native American Heritage during a Hands-on History showcase with hands-on activities that celebrate the culture of indigenous people in Texas.
The museum is located on VC’s Main Campus at 2200 E. Red River Street in Victoria. Admission is free. Donations are appreciated. For more information, visit MuseumOfTheCoastalBend.org.
