Dr. Julia Riggs
At 92 years old, Dr. Julia Riggs has much to be grateful for. And when she reflects on a life filled with happy memories, one experience rises above the rest — her time at Victoria College.
“Truly, Victoria College is the best thing that ever happened to me,” said Riggs. “I’m so proud to have been a part of VC’s legacy.”
Riggs grew up in Mesquite, Texas, and began her career teaching at Odessa High School for six years before moving briefly to California. During a visit with friends there, she received a call from her mother with unexpected news: a Mr. Bing had reached out about a teaching opportunity at Victoria College. That “Mr. Bing” was none other than Dr. Roland Bing, the Dean of Students who would later serve as VC President.
Her first question: “Where’s Victoria, Texas?”
With a map in hand, Riggs took a leap of faith and drove south for the interview. She was hired in 1964 under the leadership of then-President, Dr. JD Moore. She went on to spend the next 27 years doing what she loved.
“I had wonderful colleagues, department heads and support from the administration,” said Riggs. “I’m grateful they let me stay for so long.”
During her tenure, Riggs discovered a new passion — flying. With a dream of flying helicopters, she took flying lessons through VC chemistry teacher John Remmer and logged 16 hours of solo flight time. She considered earning her pilot’s license but chose to pursue her doctorate instead.
From the classroom to the cockpit, Victoria College gave Riggs opportunities she never imagined. The friendships she built there still keep her active and engaged with the VC community today.
