CDL Instructor Rocky Pullin
Growing up in Leesville, Texas, west of Gonzales, it was a 30-minute drive for Rocky Pullin to get to the grocery store, run errands, or go to work. Driving quickly became part of his life, so Pullin decided to embrace it.
He has worked in and around the trucking industry since 1976. He started out hauling cattle locally and then transitioned to transporting crude oil, hazardous materials, and more across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and back home again to Texas.
At nearly 70 years old, he still finds plenty to love about the industry, especially teaching at Victoria College, where he now mentors aspiring truck drivers at VC’s Gonzales Center.
"I really enjoy getting to know the students and watching them go from nervous to confident behind the wheel," said Pullin.
From the meticulous details of pre-trip inspections and essential truck maintenance to mastering safety protocols and achieving ultimate road readiness, Pullin’s hands-on approach is central to his teaching. He helps students not just learn, but truly gain the critical skills and unwavering confidence they need to succeed. One of his favorite parts of the job is joining students in the cab for real-world practice, guiding them through spins around Gonzales as they hone their abilities on the open road.
A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) can take you places in life. Pullin has experienced the benefits firsthand.
"There’s always a job for you as a truck driver," said Pullin. "Always. That’s good job security. I tell students when they get their CDL to take a job, get some experience over the road, and then they can really go drive anywhere for anybody. If you want to travel and see different places, truck driving is a great way to do that."
Whether students are starting fresh or looking for a new career path, Pullin says truck driving opens the door to opportunity—and he’s proud to help steer them in the right direction.
