Garza is blind, a challenge that might have stopped others from pursuing their dreams, but not him.
When Zyron Garza enrolled at Victoria College, he chose an unexpected path forward. One shaped by determination, resilience and an unwavering belief in his own potential.
Garza is blind, a challenge that might have stopped others from pursuing their dreams, but not him. In late 2019, doctors discovered a Grade 3 meningioma brain tumor, roughly the size of a softball. It was a life-threatening diagnosis.
“I was about a day away from dying when the doctor found it with a CAT scan,” he recalls.
The tumor was removed in time, but the procedure left him blind. What followed was a two-year journey of adjustment, healing, and rediscovery.
Garza found a lifeline at the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center for the Blind in Austin, where he graduated at the end of 2021. Even during that transitional time, he regained his confidence and enrolled at VC in 2023.
It wasn’t easy. But with the help of supportive staff members in VC’s Disability Services Department, he found a way forward.
“As a blind individual, I know accommodations can be difficult,” he said. “But these staff members have helped—and continue to help—me in whatever way they can.”
VC’s Disability Services played an integral role in supporting Garza, with staff even walking the path he would take between classes to ensure the smoothest route. They support many students in a variety of ways, including providing classroom support, testing accommodations, assistive technology, and more.
Garza also benefited from VC’s KEY Center, which provides additional academic and social support to eligible students. He also became actively involved in student life, even serving as the Vice President of VC's Student Government Association.
Garza didn’t walk on this journey alone. When he walks the stage on May 17 to earn his associate degree, he hopes to inspire others to be brave enough to take the first step in achieving their goals.
“Hopefully, my story can demonstrate that there are no limitations if you set your mind to something,” said Garza. “I am grateful to have had this opportunity.”
