"Deciding to enroll at Victoria College is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”
When Alexandra Deckelmann walks the stage on May 17, she’ll close the book on an unexpected chapter in her life. As she gets ready to celebrate a storybook ending, she can’t help but reflect on the beginning of her journey at Victoria College.
Deckelmann was ready for something new when she decided to pursue her GED through VC’s Adult Education Department. It was scary to take the first step, but she didn’t look back.
After earning her GED, she enrolled full time at VC and will soon graduate with an associate degree.
“Before I enrolled, I just didn’t think college was for me,” said Deckelmann. “Where I am in life right now – I never thought this would be possible. Deciding to enroll at Victoria College is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”
That decision had a domino effect. Deckelmann got a part-time job as a student worker in VC’s Advising & Counseling Department and flourished. Today, she’s working full time as an Enrollment Guide, where she assists students in enrolling in healthcare programs, all while pursuing her degree. Her time at VC as a student and an employee has inspired her to pursue a lifelong career in higher education.
Every setback in life set Deckelmann up for an even bigger comeback. Her son has been a huge motivator in pushing her across the finish line, but she’s also doing this for someone else – herself.
“I have such a great support system that I’m thankful for,” said Deckelmann. “But I’m proud to be doing this for me. This is mine, and it means so much.”
It means so much that Deckelmann is about to turn the page on the next exciting chapter. This fall, she’ll begin pursuing her bachelor’s degree in communications through The University of Texas at San Antonio’s online program.
All while continuing to inspire and support the next generation of students as an employee and role model at Victoria College.
