VC Fine Arts Gallery hosts solo exhibition featuring Sonya McAlister’s works

A solo exhibition by Victoria College Art Instructor Sonya McAlister, “N 28° 48' 54.85''. E 96° 58' 47.935' Waypoints,” is now on display at VC’s Fine Arts Gallery.

McAlister’s artwork explores themes of connection, temporality, perception and experience. She approaches her work experimentally, often creating new methods and processes within the two-dimensional plane.

In her current work, McAlister creates primitive drawing tools found in nature and then intuitively responds to the landscapes where they are collected. Her drawings and paintings represent the markings of an exchange between the artist and her natural surroundings.

“This work is about my deep connection and dependence on the earth,” said McAlister. “The process reflects the idea that the understanding and healing at the heart of connection can guide one to answers that will support the health and longevity of nature.”

The gallery is open on Wednesdays from 10-11 a.m. and 1-2 p.m., and on Thursdays and Fridays from 12:30-3 p.m. The exhibit is open to the public, students and employees through Friday, Nov. 1.

The gallery is located in the Fine Arts Building on VC’s Main Campus at 2200 E. Red River Street.
