VC’s Museum of the Coastal Bend to host grand opening for La Misión exhibit

Victoria College’s Museum of the Coastal Bend will host the grand opening of its permanent new exhibit, “Where Texas Ranching Began: La Misión,” on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 11 a.m-1 p.m.

The exhibit, housed within the museum’s new Borchers Leon Exhibit Hall, explores the history of the Coastal Bend’s ranching heritage from 1721-1920.

“Ranching has been pivotal in shaping the culture of the Coastal Bend, and we’re honored to be able to showcase the character, resilience and innovation of generations of Coastal Bend residents,” said Sue Prudhomme, VC’s Executive Director of Cultural Affairs. “The new exhibit hall is the culmination of almost a decade of planning, fundraising and hard work by many people.”

La Misión, the first component of the exhibit, focuses on Texas ranching’s origins at the Spanish missions located in the Coastal Bend. Subsequent components – Vaquero, La Vida, and Innovación – will open over the next two years.

The public opening will include interactive activities for all ages.

VC students and employees are invited to a special reception on Thursday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Museum members can also attend the second portion of the reception on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 4:30-6:30 p.m.
