Victoria College has been awarded two grants totaling $933,502 from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) to support its adult education and literacy programs.
VC received a $593,502 grant (87.8 percent federally funded and 12.2 percent state funded) for adult education and literacy services, and a $340,000 grant (100 percent federally funded) for integrated English literacy and civics education services. The programs will help more residents throughout the Golden Crescent region attain their high school equivalency (GED), postsecondary education, training and employment after completion.
Victoria College is one of 40 recipients in Texas awarded grants by TWC totaling $83,030,502. Funded by the US Department of Education’s Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education, the grants will continue educational opportunities for adult learners served by TWC’s Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) programs.
“We are committed to providing our students with the measurable skills they need to flourish as working members of our community,” said Tiffany Johnson, VC’s Executive Director of Adult Education & Literacy. “With these grants, we will continue to equip residents with skills and resources necessary to complete their education and achieve their career goals.”
The grant funding will allow VC’s Adult Education & Literacy Program to provide:
- Individualized class schedules with various instructional delivery options
- Strategic assistance for struggling students
- Outreach efforts to re-engage students who stopped attending
- Instructional designers to support student learning
“Adult Education & Literacy services are essential components of Victoria College’s vision of improving lives and strengthening communities,” said Dr. Jennifer Kent, VC President. “The new TWC grants will permit VC to continue offering pathways to prosperity for adult learners by helping them gain the confidence and skills they need to increase their earning potential.”
AEL services are provided free of charge to adult learners who lack functional literacy or have not earned a high school diploma (or recognized equivalent). Eligibility also applies to English language learners, including non-English-speaking professionals who have relocated to the United States with degrees or credentials from their native countries.
