Dr. Josie Rivera, a longtime Victoria College trustee, resigned earlier this month after 14 years of service.

The former public-school educator joined the VC Board of Trustees in 2006 and served eight years before returning in 2018. She also served 18 years on the VC Foundation Board.

“Dr. Rivera’s legacy will have a lasting impact on Victoria College as well as me personally,” said Dr. Jennifer Kent, VC President. “She was a first-generation college student who overcame obstacles to obtain multiple degrees throughout her long career in education. In the last four years, it was a true pleasure to work with Dr. Rivera on the Board of Trustees, and I have been deeply inspired by her passion for students and strong belief in the power of higher education to change lives.”

Rivera chaired the board’s Student Success and Programs Committee for several years.

“Dr. Rivera’s dedication to student success is inspiring,” said Bland Proctor, Chair of VC’s Board of Trustees. “We are grateful for her exemplary service to our college and our community.”

In addition to her roles at VC, Rivera served on numerous community boards and worked with organizations including the Victoria Chamber of Commerce, Affectionate Arms Adult Center, UHV President’s Regional Advisory Board, Hospice of South Texas Board of Directors, the Boys and Girls Club of Victoria, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the DeTar Healthcare System.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve Victoria College and its students,” said Rivera. “I will always hold the Victoria College family near to my heart.”
