Victoria College Associate Degree Nursing Program Instructor Jo Anne Settles was named the recipient of VC’s Distinguished Faculty Award during the spring Commencement Ceremony on May 12.

The award, presented by the Victoria College Foundation, honors excellence, promotes effective teaching and recognizes exceptional faculty for their contributions to student learning through classroom teaching.

Nominees for the award were judged on resumes, student evaluations and letters of recommendation from students, faculty members and others.

“Working at Victoria College is a unique and special joy,” Settles said. “I am very humbled to receive such a distinction from my colleagues. It is my honor and privilege to get to work every day doing something I love and am passionate about.”

“Nothing says you are doing a good job like being recognized by your peers, and that’s what our Distinguished Faculty Award is based on,” said VC President Dr. David Hinds. “Jo Anne exemplifies what good teaching is; it starts with caring about students, their lives and their future. Being a teacher worth recognition also requires understanding one’s field at a deep level and the capacity to communicate in a clear and systematic fashion. We are so fortunate to have Jo Anne as a faculty member here at VC.”

Settles has been an instructor for Victoria College’s nursing programs for 31 years.

“I get to meet each aspiring new nurse on the first day of nursing school, and participate in helping them develop their dreams and talents into being dedicated, competent and skilled nurses,” Settles said. “I always hope they love it as much as I do.”
