VC graduates 11 students from EMT course

Group1 Victoria College’s Emergency Medical Services Program graduated 11 candidates for Emergency Medical Technician certification on May 8 at VC’s Student Center.

The 280-mile roundtrips were worth it for Wyatt Wasicek.

Wasicek, 21, often drove from his home in George West to his job at University Hospital in San Antonio and then to Victoria College for his Emergency Medical Technician classes before heading back home.

“I drank lots of coffee,” said Wasicek, who was one of 11 students recognized on May 8 at VC’s Student Center for completing VC’s Spring 2018 Emergency Medical Technician training and becoming eligible to sit for the National Registry of EMTs examination for certification.

Wasicek, who plans to also earn his Paramedic Certificate, graduated from George West High School in 2015 not knowing what he wanted to do for a career.

“I like to help people,” Wasicek said. “I ended up here, and I’m glad I did. This program and the instructors are awesome. They let you do a lot and teach you a lot. You learn so much more than what is just in the book. You always have to go by the book, but they teach you even more.”

Thomas Roznovsky of Edna was named class valedictorian and Todd Bures of Victoria was named salutatorian. Bures also received the Peer-Selected Best in Class Award. Allison Garza of Victoria received the Best Clinical Performance Award, and Cesar Reyna of Port Lavaca received the Best Skills Performance Award.

Other graduates were Jason Corbell and Blaze Johnson of Yoakum, Samantha Peters of La Vernia, Lauren Reyes of Kenedy and Patrick Matellero and Carlton Wilkinson of Victoria.

The students completed 80 hours of hands-on clinical training in emergency room, respiratory therapy and EMS while also completing six credit hours of classroom lecture and labs totaling over 124 hours.

The next EMT course begins Thursday, May 24 for the summer session on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To register for the course or to obtain more information, contact Victoria College EMS Program Coordinator Susie Jechow at (361) 572-6426 or Susie.Jechow@VictoriaCollege.edu.
