VC professor’s poem picked by Express-News for special series

Good1 VC English Professor Michelle Paulsen had one of her poems chosen to be published by the San Antonio Express-News’ “In the Wake” series.

A poem submitted by Victoria College English Professor Michelle Paulsen was one of nine chosen to be published by the San Antonio Express-News in its “In the Wake” series.

Paulsen’s poem “untitled” was published on the Express-News website and in the newspaper’s print edition on Nov. 26 to begin a nine-week series of poems reflecting on the aftermath and recovery from Hurricane Harvey.

The series was the idea of Express-News Poetry Editor Jim LaVilla-Havelin, who sent out a call to Paulsen and other poets in Texas Gulf Coast region to submit pieces. Paulsen’s “untitled” was chosen to start the nine-week series.

“I wanted to stand in solidarity with the poets in the region who were affected by or lived through Hurricane Harvey,” LaVilla-Havelin said. “Michelle’s writing for me has always been very direct and very powerful. I thought her poem was a good way to kick off the series.”

“After the hurricane, I find myself humbled in many ways,” Paulsen said. “To be selected for ‘In the Wake,’ to represent the emotional journey so many of us must take, is also humbling.”

Following is the poem “untitled” submitted by Paulsen:

in the height
of the hurricane
he says
i don’t want
to know anything
i don’t need
to know anything
tell me what you have
and i will tell you
who you are.

Paulsen also had one of her poems chosen to be published for the 2018 Texas Poetry Calendar.

“It’s hard for me to explain composing,” Paulsen said. “It’s rather as if something is stewing, and then you find the words for it.”
